Your chance to trek across the Sahara Desert for Rowcroft

09 August 2016

Rowcroft Hospie is encouraging adventurous fundraisers to sign up for a six-day trek across the Sahara Desert from 16-21 February 2017, to help raise vital funds for families with life-limiting illnesses in South Devon.

The extreme challenge is being offered as part of Rowcroft's emergency fundraising appeal, which aims to raise an extra £585,000 over the next 12 months.

Last moth the hospice announced it faced a funding shortfall and needed to reduce costs and raise additional income as part of a three year business plan to return the hospice to financial stability.

Jon Hill, Acting Chief Executive of Rowcroft Hospice, explained: "We have developed a three year plan to ensure we can continue to care for 2000 local people and their families each year, but we need to raise an additional £585,000 over the next twelve months to make this possible.

"There are many ways you can support Rowcroft to help this happen, from making a monthly donation or playing our weekly lottery, to siging up to trek to the top of a mountain! Whichever option you choose, we are so incredibly grateful for your suppory."

Rowcroft's six day Sahara trek starts and finishes in Ouarzazate, Morocco, offering those who take part the chance to climb to the peak of the Chigaga Dunes to witness a stunning sunrise, view the incredible High Atlas Mountains, and sip authentic mint tea with the locals.

Hayley Norrish, Community Fundraising Manager for Rowcroft Hospice, said: "This challenge is perfect for people who want to combine their fundraising efforts with a once in a life-time adventure. The Sahara Desert is an ever-changing lanscape; the days will be hot and tough, but the views some of the best in the world.

"As the whole trek is only six days, our Sahara challenge is the perfect expedition for someone wanting to challenge themselves, but with only limited time to spare."

She added: "Taking place in February, it's a chance to escape the winter for a few days, while doing something amazing to support local families with life-limiting illnesses."

To take part in the challenge, the hospice asks that participants pay a one off, non-refundable £199 registration fee and then agree to raise £1800 for the hospice.
