Thousands prepare for Rowcroft Hospice’s Sleep Walk

01 July 2015

More than two thousand ladies and hundreds of volunteers are preparing for Rowcroft Hospice’s Sleep Walk, which is taking place next Saturday 11 July.

Final preparations are underway for the sell-out event, which will see ladies walking their choice of five or ten mile route through the night from Torbay Leisure Centre to the Imperial Hotel in Torquay and back again, in order to raise vital funds for the hospice.

Rowcroft hopes its annual ladies-only night walk, which is the biggest event of its kind in South Devon and continues to grow in popularity year on year, will raise a massive £200,000 to support the services the hospice provides for thousands of people across South Devon.

Daniel Robson, Rowcroft’s Event’s Co-ordinator, said: “Every year it is amazing to see so many women and volunteers across South Devon come together to support Rowcroft.

“This year we’ve seen another record number of ladies sign up to take part and the event has taken on a Wild West theme, so we’re looking forward to seeing everyone in their fancy dress.

He added: “We’re hoping to break all Sleep Walk records by raising £200,000 on the night. More than 70% of our funding comes from the local community and it costs £780 every day just to run our Inpatient Unit, so any amount our ladies can raise in sponsorship, and supporters of theirs can donate, is gratefully received.”

The hospice is encouraging those who would like to support the ladies taking part in the Sleep Walk to text BABS15 to 70070 and donate their choice of £5 or £10.

Daniel explained: “Text donations are a really easy way to show your support for all the people taking part on 11 July, whether you know them personally, or simply want to play your part in supporting your local hospice.”

Karen Mason, 52, has taken part in every Sleep Walk since her sister died at the hospice in 2009. She added: “I’m taking part in The Sleep Walk because my sister, Alison, was cared for by the Rowcroft team and I want to ensure other families are able to receive the same care she did. Please support all those brilliant ladies who are taking part in The Sleep Walk by texting BABS15 and either £5 or £10 to 70070, thank you.”
