Val's Story

Val is a 54 year old grandmother of one, she is one of many remarkable people who dedicate time and energy to fundraising for Rowcroft Hospice. This month (as we go to print) Val will be taking on her biggest challenge yet…a 45 mile walk in memory of her father Alan, who was cared for at the hospice 10 years ago.

“I’m doing the walk 10 years to the day that my Dad died while in Rowcroft’s care, the second walking day is April fools day, some say only a fool would walk that sort of distance!

“Dad was only 70 when he died, he came into Rowcroft for the last few days of his life, the difference in him when he arrived at Rowcroft was phenomenal, you could see his whole demeanour change, he was brighter and he was so happy to be there. It’s just such an amazing place, he was looked after so well, if he wanted a glass of whiskey, he got a glass of whiskey!

“It’s not just the care he received, it was the whole package, we were all, the whole family, cared for, they had all the time in the world for us which was amazing. The staff had got to know that Mum’s tipple was a glass of sherry and the minute Dad died a glass of sherry appeared like that.”

10 years on and Val still vividly remembers the care that was given to her father. When the idea of a challenging walk came along she decided to do it in aid of Rowcroft, in his memory.

A keen walker, Val will follow the John Musgrave trail which runs from Maidencombe in a big arch round to Totnes and Brixham, and has joined it back up into a circle making it a total of 45 miles.

“My grandson will be walking along Torquay seafront with me for part of the final leg, which means the world to me.”

As well as the challenging walk Val has worked hard to organise a big event in The Buccaneer bar in Babbacombe for the weekend of the walk. A raffle, auction, hotdogs, karaoke, games and comedy will all add to the fundraising total…

“Even if I can just raise enough money to get the hospice a case of whiskey and a case of sherry I’ll be happy that I have helped Rowcroft to care for another family like mine.”
