Frequently Asked Questions

Take on the weekend challenge of hiking Ben Nevis

When does the trip take place?

10-12 June or 12-14 August 2016

What do I have to do to take part?

To sign up for this challenge and agree to raise funds for Rowcroft Hospice, complete the online registration form and pay the £75 registration fee. This fee goes directly to our partner organiser, Discover Adventure, upon registration and is non-refundable.

You will then need to raise a minimum sponsorship of £550. This sum includes the full price of your challenge.

You will need to be able to pay Rowcroft the full amount of your minimum sponsorship eight weeks prior to your departure. This is because Rowcroft must pay Discover Adventure the cost of your trip in good time before you leave. The actual cost of your trip is £275; the remainder of your sponsorship then goes straight to benefit Rowcroft.

How does Rowcroft benefit?

At least £275 of the £550 minimum sponsorship you raise will be treated as a donation to Rowcroft Hospice. Any additional money you raise (over £550) will also go directly to the hospice. The funds you raise will help Rowcroft to continue caring for over 2,200 people in South Devon who are living with progressive, life-limiting illnesses. The annual cost of delivering hospice services is £8.3 million and over 70% of that funding comes from voluntary donations like this.

What if I can’t raise the minimum sponsorship?

We will provide you with a fundraising pack full of ideas on how to reach your target. You will also have the support of our Community Fundraising team to answer any queries along the way. However, if you do not manage to raise £550 eight weeks prior to departure you will be able to make up the shortfall yourself, or transfer onto a later challenge, giving yourself longer to fundraise.  There is also a self-funding option available where you pay the costs of the trip directly. If you choose this option, there is no minimum amount you need to raise for the Hospice – just as much as you are able to!

What level of fitness do I need for this challenge?

This hike is designed to be challenging for those of good health and fitness, and is achievable for most people provided they train well in advance. Discover Adventure will supply you with a thorough training guide when you have registered. Challenges are graded from 1 (Moderate) to 5 (Extreme).  This challenge is Grade 2. The paths we use are generally well-maintained and vary from steps, steep inclines or gradual slopes, to scree and rocky ground. You will trek approximately 11 miles on Ben Nevis. It’s vital when training to think about the hours you need to walk for and the terrain you are walking on – pure uphill, followed by pure downhill.

What kind of leadership and support can I expect on this challenge?

Your trip will be led by experienced Discover Adventure leaders who are selected for their experience in harsh environments, friendliness and approachability, sense of humour and ability to safely and effectively deal with any situation that arises. They are also trained in expedition first-aid.
