Rowcroft’s day services are provided on an out-patient basis.

Day services are offered in a flexible way, giving people using the service the choice of how they spend their time. A variety of services are offered, including complementary or music therapy sessions, spiritual care, time with one of the social work team, or joining one of the carer’s support initiatives. One of day services’ most innovative projects is My Story.

My Story provides an opportunity for people to tell their ‘story’ through reflection, recollection and reminiscence, using creative elements such as craft, music, film and audio.

Day service users benefit from being with other people in similar situations and gaining from their experiences. Carers also tell us how valuable day services are, both in terms of giving them a break from caring and because of the support they receive.

Rowcroft staff win national award

Rowcroft’s Day Services team has been awarded first prize in the International Journal of Palliative Nursing Awards for 2008.

The award was given to acknowledge the enormous team effort that has been responsible for bringing about the transformation of Rowcroft's day services to target those most in need.

The changes came about after the realisation that there were many people with life-limiting illnesses in the community who would benefit from Rowcroft’s day services. These people weren’t able to access the services due to day services running at capacity, or they found the day services environment and format unappealing.

The transformation included a number of changes, including updating the physical environment (largely thanks to a grant from the Gemini FM Charitable Trust) and restructuring and developing of services. People now receive a personalised planned service.

The day services team has worked hard to implement these changes to target those most in need, and to ensure that the essence of the service was retained. Comments received by patients experiencing the new style day services have included how Rowcroft is their “haven”, it is a place to come to “live” and how they feel “embraced” by Rowcroft’s care.
