Over the last five years, an amazing 7,337 women have walked five or ten miles in aid of Rowcroft, raising a total of £841,301.61.
This year we’re hoping to hit an all-time fundraising high of £1 million, and we’re asking for your help. The money each and every one of these ladies has raised, and continues to raise, enables our staff to provide vital care, helping more families in South Devon to make the most of the time they have together.
Our services aren’t just based in Torquay though; we have a team of nurses who go out in to the community across 300-square miles of South Devon, every day of the year. A patient’s family member once said: "When you see the Hospice at Home team walk through the door you just relax and breathe a sigh of relief, because you know help is at hand for the whole family; they are true heroes."
It’s making a difference like this in people’s lives that is made possible from events like The Sleep Walk. Thousands of women come together every year, not only to have a good night with the girls and to perhaps fulfil a personal achievement, but to help us raise more awareness of your local hospice.
Many people don’t realise that over 70% of our funding comes from the local community. The hospice fundraising team have to work hard to ensure they’re raising as much as possible, because every penny truly does count.
Months of preparation is put in to organising events like The Sleep Walk, Daniel Robson, Events Manager, says: “We continue to organise our events, not only because we know how much the local community love to take part, but because the money raised goes towards providing vital care to people living with life-limiting illnesses in South Devon. We’re asking our Sleep Walkers to help us reach an amazing £1 million so we can continue to help local families make the most of every day.”
Lynne’s mother-in-law was just one of the thousands of people cared for by the hospice last year. When she arrived at our Inpatient Unit, she couldn’t believe what she saw. Lynne described how she felt: “My lovely mother-in-law was with you last year and felt like she was in a five star hotel with the lovely food and the caring staff. She was a trained nurse herself and loved her time in Rowcroft, you are all wonderful, thank you.”
There are many ways you can help us reach this incredible fundraising target this year. Ladies, if you’d like to take part, you can sign up via www.rowcroftsleepwalk.org.uk. But if the walk isn’t for you, you can still play a big part in the success of the event either by signing up as a volunteer or simply making a donation to one of the thousands of women that will be walking through the night this July.
